In a recent explanation to a long-out-of-the-loop friend about the whole Fred situation, I summed it up as this: "I'm old Christine." If you lived under a rock for the last 5-ish years, I'm referring to the now-cancelled CBS show starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "The New Adventures of Old Christine."
The Plot:
Christine is a hardworking wife and mother. She owns a gym, she sends her kid to private school, her brother lives with her. And her husband leaves her in episode 1. Then she discovers her husband has a new girlfriend, AND HER NAME IS CHRISTINE TOO! Why is this important, you ask? Well when Fred was looking for a fine young 19-year old, he managed to find one with the same name as me. Somehow, that just makes it all a little more twisted. And yes, it makes me old Christine. I don't care. I think she's got way more going for her than new Christine anyway.
For anyone that was curious about new Christine, read here:

Awkward: Log Flume for 5

Super-awkward.......
As far as my definitions for situations on a hierarchical level of personal hell go (think DANTE's INFERNO), I think I've added a new situation. Now I'm contending my recent amusement park trip against my previous most awkward post-relationship moment- being stuck sitting next to my ex-boyfriend on a train, while my friends sat in the row in front of me, less than 24 hours after we broke up. When later confronted about the event they said, "Oh, we thought you might still have some issues to work out." No, our issues were pretty well settled as of last night, when I told him it was over. And by far the best quote came from a friend that was a little not-too-caught up to the news: "I didn't know you guys had broken up. I thought you wanted some couple time."
To return to my story, I headed to an amusement park this weekend with some friends, and Fred (he was invited by one of our guy friends, for the record). Fred and said friend (lets call him Greg) showed up to the event wearing superhero capes. For anyone that's been out of the loop, I have barely spoken to Fred three months. I did attend his birthday party (with mild protest) earlier this month after receiving a personal invitation. In said invitation (via text), he said he would like to be friends again and he missed me from his life, as I am/was one of his closest friends. That said, it would seem reasonable that he might attempt to talk to me, right? Haha, wrong again.
While Fred did spend time apologizing to my friend for singing Stephen-Lynch style songs about her at the party, and time chatting with my other friend about various summer plans, he said nary a word directed at me. Let the record show I didn't say much to him either, but that's my prerogative as the hurt party in this situation. I don't have anything particularly nice to say to him, so I'm choosing not to say anything. But he, who (refer back to above) claims he wants to have things be different (as in me talking to him on a frequent basis in a polite and friendly manner), better learn to start the conversation if he hopes for anything to change. Even a simple "Hey how's it going?" might show some effort on his part that he actually means what he says. Why would I want to be friends with someone who can't even say hello to me? I'm not seeing any reason to be buddies or make any efforts toward forgiveness at this time. See his announcement via Facebook that he's dating a 19-year old AND the prior 'I need time to think things out, I'm not ready for a relationship yet' posts in case you've forgotten why this whole thing begun. So in essence, I'm issuing him a challenge (it has become known and my and Java's phrase to live by) - MAN UP! Real men say they are sorry (they don't text it), they make efforts to live up to their claims, in theory they tell the truth, and they don't do things that might reasonably make their friends upset.
Furthermore, I have so easily made a decision about what my plans are for 4th of July [as I had planned to take an annual road trip to the Birthplace of Freedom - AKA Boston - with my friends, (including Fred)]. Drum roll please- I'M NOT GOING! Not only will I get some much needed downtime, but I will avoid a weekend of uncomfortable tension- yay! And as an added bonus, I won't have to sit there and watch Fred and New Christine (an explanation on her name to follow in the next post) all weekend. Yes folks, he invited his child bride girlfriend on a trip he knew I was coming on. That seems to add another check mark in the "He's a douche" column for those of you keeping score. But rumor has it she's hesitant to go, because she thinks some of his friends hate her, (I was not mentioned in the grouping ironically enough) so I'm curious to see how this plays out.
So now that we're all caught up, let's return to my awkward moment. Fred did have the good sense not to try to sit next to me on any roller coasters, as I might have tried to hit him in the face with my hands and blamed it on gravitational pull (damn that G-force). But when our group decided to hit the log flume, it all went crazy. We decided it would be reasonable to squish 5 adults in a log flume (broken up into two parts and probably broken up best to accommodate 4). Everyone climbed in before me. I stood there on the turntable loading dock saying "Hey guys, where am I supposed to squeeze in?" Of course the only room to be found was to squeeze into the front, smack dab behind my friend and right in front of Fred. In another time and place (read 5 months ago), I would have been thrilled with this prospect; it would have made me giddy. But given the circumstances, it made me ill and uncomfortable. I could not wait to get out. So I sat in a log flume, Fred just inches away from me, my friend's ponytail in my face, and got ridiculously soaked. It was not my idea of fun.

Does Age Difference Ruin Relationships?
My thought- yes.
Take this poll. Guess which way I voted. I also think Sean Penn dating ScarJo is kinda gross, like Calista and Harrison.

Thoughts About Other People's Thoughts About Relationships
Nothing like McDreamy lamenting about his love for ferry boats to make me hope there might be a happy ending out there. Oh, Meredith just made a voiceover speech about lines, and how we shpuld have them and they shouldn't be crossed, then she tounged mcDreamy in the elevator. I can't honstly blame her, but she does have a point. Lines are good, and yes they sometimes isolate us, but if we don't know they're there, are we at fault for crossing them?
But nonetheless, through my own relationship pain- which is still too fresh to talk about, its fun to analyze other people's takes on relationships between ladies and dudes. Marie Claire blogger Rich just wrote a post about how he has a cadre of girl friends. Notice the space between the two words. we have girl, followed by friend, but not related to it. There is an intentional space that makes all the difference. It keeps feelings out, it keeps people in, and sometimes against their rational judgment. Ok, this may be colored a bit with my recent feelings. He lists the way his friends, his "editors" help him choose clothes, talk to (or talk like a coherent person) to girls, etc...
Now while all girls have this crucial support system to analyze guys (because if we didn't, we would have even less of a clue what they're talking about), I'm not sure it works when one of the people is a dude. First of all, it is a warning sign to a girl when she meets a dude with too many lady friends. Oftentimes, these friendship lines are blurry and there's always going to be jealousy. And if you're constantly managing what a dude says, and how he dresses, and he hasn't run screaming into the hills, you are involved in a relationship (albeit a possibly unhealthy one).
And although more evidence seems to suggest to me that men and women cannot be friends (see When Harry Met Sally). Why? Because if a dude can tolerate having coffee with you, listening to you complain about your boss, and makes fun of your horrible bowling game, and he doesn't want to date you but he still talks to you, you have a ticking time bomb.
So I also enjoyed readying the 20 Nothings take on dating by drinking style, or rather, drinking styles that doom relationships. In Jessie's take, many drinking styles will end a relationship. Perhaps she's got a point. Drinking plays a huge part in 20-something relationships. I recently had a friend that was going on a first date with a non drinker. she wsn't sure where tbhey would start. the date wnt fine, but he never called her again. In my opinion, a first date is an optimal time to have a drink to get past those "soo do you ... (insert random topic) questions."
This episode (episode 2) of Greys is coming to an end. Meredith agreed to let George and Izzy move in (breaking down her barriers), but she refuses to cross the line with McDreamy (for a few more episodes, at least). If only things were that simple.

Not A Shelf Girl!
I discovered a timely blog piece from a few years ago when I needed it most. A lovely girl called MatchDotWrong got radio silenced by a guy she liked, who was being cagey. She called him and left this message:
"I feel a little stupid leaving this voicemail because chances are that you're blowing me off. But the stubborn part of me refuses to believe that I was so wrong about you, so I'm wondering if there was some kind of miscommunication. If that's not the case, I was hoping you might give me an explanation. Because to be honest, I am totally baffled by the radio silence. If I'm totally off base, then I would really appreciate a call or an email. Hope to talk to you soon." Read more here.
She went on to say that he called back and said the magic wasn't there. A totally crappy response, but still, it's better late than never. Closure people, it's the least that is owed to someone in a bad situation. Marie Claire blogger Maura Kelly asked the other day is honestly in breakups is overrated. In the past, I have to admit I haven't always been honest at the expense of protecting someones feelings. But if you don't want to date me or be in a vague/undefined relationship with me, and you're now dating someone else, FACEBOOK is not the way to find out!
ANALYSIS:
So, as the wonderful 20-Somethings blog has outlined, men are divided into several categories, and the man-child is on the rise. As much as I wanted to believe Fred was not a man child, he clearly is. Now, he's in a relationship (thanks for the heads up late last night Facebook!) with a 19-year old. Top off my weeks of wisdom teeth pain (I'm counting the days til Thursday), this was not good news.
I haven't talked to him in days, and as the last few days of dental issues had left me exhausted, I was looking form him to talk and take my mind off things. Well, my tooth pain has been less on my mind now, for sure. Here's how it went down:
I unknowingly asked on Wednesday night what he had done that night (as he often takes a nap until Conan on those nights because 'nothing is on TV'). After talking about a Mets game, he said he played with Facebook options such as changing the language (to Pirate most likely), and now he was in a civil union. Haha- funny story, he met this girl online, they've hung out a bunch of times. My response: What? And some catty but totally funny comments about registering at Walmart. My friend heard what I said and she was in shock at my suggestion they get gifts from the Miley Cyrus collection.
The part that bothered me the most:
FRED: In any event, we enjoy each others company in the present time lol.
(Direct quote, including the inability to space words out an all)
So, did I miss something? Clearly. Although, not too long ago (a few weeks ago), you said you were enjoying my company. After getting our mutual friend to interview Fred about the situation he reported back to me, "it doesn't look good. This is kinda messed up."
Cut to this morning:
I had a text waiting when I woke up. From Fred. It read:
11:31 am
You wouldn't want a PS3 would you.... $200
In the words of Avril Lavigne, "What the Hell?"
Formulating a response that is a mixture of "Are you kidding me?" "I hate you" and "Wow you are a childish, lying, tool!" But most importantly- I am not gonna be his shelf girl while he indulges in childish behavior. Pop out- I don't think we can be friends anymore.
To be continued......

I'm Taking Back Java's Apology to the Gents
Let me begin by saying I'm sure there are nice guys out there somewhere. In my experience, I've seen them. They date your friends sometimes and they're nice to you. But most of those princely looking dudes end up being frogs. My buddy Java recently wrote an apology on behalf of women to dudes because of the crazy advice Cosmo gives about "signs your man might be cheating," pointed out by Cracked.com.
But given my recent dealings (haha- as if adult men actually deal with their issues head-on), with dudes being shifty and LYING, I tend to think they have it coming- ball clamps and all.
For instance, the shifty Peter Florrick on CBS's "The Good Wife," (played by the endearing but almost un-loveable a-hole referred to as Mr. Big) not only cheated on his wife in a horrible scandal that sent him to jail and her struggling to provide for their kids, but he redeemed himself, plead for her to take him back, and now we find out the jerk had a one night thing with his lead investigator. Said investigator Kalinda has since then became one of his wife's closest friends and confidantes. That's messed up. It's great TV, but it's messed up.
Anyway back to magazine advice:
An article from The Gloss suggested that as a society we take female infidelity more seriously than male infidelity, almost like, o well it's a guy, we can't expect him to do any better. Well its not 1960 anymore- so let's get some perspective. Deciect and liying in relationships should always be NOT expected, and its not cool. So begin duped still hurts, regardless of gender. And ther duper should feel that pain. As the article suggests, men cheat more for sex and women cheat more for intimacy.
Fine, that sounds reasonable. But at the same time I have to bring up the fact that more and more dudes today are stuck in this unattractive, childish non-adult, Peter Pan mindset. This is not an excuse for cheating, but if I was dating a dude who was constantly acting like he was 12 instead of 24, and I met another guy who actually got up in the morning, went to a job, didn't spend hours playing video games, and called when he said he would, then I could see wanting to get out of the former relationship. On the complete other hand, immature guys seem to flock to younger girls - so they can be on he same level. (SEE FRED)
In a more "lets keep a less crazy perspective on cheating, but recognize its still bad" article, Marie Claire's resident dude blogger Rich presented "Signs He's Cheating" in February. Read this, not the Cosmo piece. Rich, who seems like a nice, normal guy, breaks it down for a guys side. But after that, feel free to go all Carrie Underwood on his car- its a lesson he may never forget.

7 Days Without You- I'll Never Last THAT Long
To quote my favorite bloggers, the 20-Nothings, "So the bad news is that the number one American regret involves missed or failed opportunities at love and relationships."
Why does this matter to me?
My good pal, Fred, didn't talk to me for over 21 hours. I know, shocking right? Some flirty texts that began as of 8am yesterday petered off around 1pm, and the next message from him was at 11:30 am today. Nearly a day of not hearing from him and I'm freaking out, wondering if he took a long nap after work and slept until the next day, or worst case- he was in a horrible accident and I need to be at his bedside. Snap out of it girl.... In reality, he said he went out with a friend last night. So fine, no reason to panic. I only sent one text in those 20+ hours between 1pm and today, casually asking how his afternoon at work was.
The proble,- It's just that it felt strange not to talk to him at all for one night, like something was missing. Which leads me to the simple conclusion- I have really fallen for him. But if I say how much it bothered me not to talk to him, I drift into crazy stalker girl territory. We're not in a relationship, so I kind of have no right to be this bothered, but I am. So I stay quiet and cool. For now.

Playing With My Heart- Part 2
Subtitle: Two Steps Forward, One Step Back, and One to the Side
(no this is not the time warp)
When we left off, I texted Fred after a great night out and said "If i didn't know any better, I'd say you like me........
Fred sees my text and raises me one: I'd say you like me too.
My response: Maybe I do.....
Which led to a long conversation. It took place in two parts.
The endgame:
"I like you and talking to you. You make me happy. I'm not in a place where I want to pursue a relationship right now. I want to keep seeing you and see where it goes."
My first thought, "What? Are you kidding?"
My second:"Why?" (Although he clearly outlined reasons why- job transition, unresolved ex issues)
My third: "I'm kinda not surprised."
My fourth: "I wish Taylor Swift was here right now to lead me in a song."
My fifth: "Where's the candy?"
The sixth thing I thought, back in adult mode: Hmm, honesty, it was quite refreshing. Not the #1 thing I wanted to hear, but direct and not game-ridden. Perhaps men aren't going the way of pagers, as several news outlets and blogs are recently claiming.
The End of Men- The Atlantic Monthly
Where Have All the Good Men Gone?- The Wall Street Journal
Why A Real Man's So Hard to Find? -The New York Post
Sex is Cheap- Slate
Although the 20-Nothings, who I aspire to be one day, offer a great analysis of boys, guys, and men, which I definitely recommend checking out. I've read it a lot lately and compared all the males I know to each of the categories.
Back to Fred....
I did see Fred, again. We enjoyed an afternoon at the mall. We tried on hats, we looked for books, and he bought me ice cream. One weekend, two cheek kisses, three days of confusion.

Playing With My Heart- Part 1
I don't know where to begin exactly. Clearly, it begins with the night my lady mojo was crushed, because last night had a bit of deja vu. Notwithstanding, we also have to consider this happened after Fred finally manned up and kissed me, and I haven't seen him since then.
Headed out to an arcade for game night with friends (including Fred), this time on my turf. We all hang out and get drinks. Here's where things get different- our conversation flows better, and we naturally go off to the bar together. He buys me a beer. My friend texts me and says she will keep the group away. We play several games, and he becomes my official ticket counter and folder. We rock the "Deal or No Deal' machine and I challenge him to skee ball- winning several skee ball horse races. He beats me once, just to prove he is a skee ball champ.
The gang rents a pool table. We become partners. For some reason, I am completely sucking at pool- I'm convinced this is a bad week for pool because I lost a lot on Tuesday night too. He is convinced I have been lying about my pool prowess. Fred is surprisingly good at pool, sitting on the table to sink shots. He's sending me flirty texts durign the games. He buys me another ddrink, but my id is at the pool counter. Finally the bartender verifies I am not 12 years old and gives me the drink.
We cash in tickets. Of course I have like 1,000 and all I want is some sweet tarts. I offer Fred the 100 or so tickets so he can get a tie dye Mets teddy bear. He promises me he'll give me tickets next time. I could care less about the tickets. I also swipe over 300 points so a friend and her boyfriend can get a bear to befriend their stuffed animal. I also absentmindedly pass him a purple sweet tart which is at the top of my candy. He looks confused for a moment.
Me: you said you like purple.
Him: Thanks! (pops purple sweet tart in his mouth).
Fred drove up with some friends, so a quite elaborate plan for him to walk me to the car gets thwarted by the largeness of the group and sleepiness (it was after 1:30 AM). The group walks me out and I drive them down to their car. Fred waves the bear in my face, giving me a cheekful of bear. I ask if he plans to hig me too. He leans over and hugs me, and gives a quick check kiss. I quickly cheek kiss as well, since his cheek is right there.
At home, I look at the texts he's been sending from the back of the car. I decide to be bold and text him that it seems like he likes me. As Ted Mosby from HIMYM says, nothing good happens after 2AM. To be continued.......

Chivalry is Not Dead!
Just when I think Fred can't be any sweeter, he tells me about his Saturday night and his fforts to keep a creeper away from a friend. He says, I'm so tired, I was at the bar until 3, although I planned to leave even earlier.
He tells me how the band played one of my favorite songs, and then says he was leaving and a friend from work was trapped in a corner with a sketch dude. She mouthed "help me," and he came over and joined them for the rest of the night, keeping the creeper at a distance until said creeper's friend interceded about an hour later and pulled creeper away.
Sounds like he's a keeper.

The Cutest Text I've Ever Gotten
I was all prepared to blog again about what is sexy- part 2," which is going to become a weekly blog post. But on the way there, I got the cutest text ever from Fred. It read:
Grocery shopping with mother... saw capri sun, thought of you.
This was completely heart-melting. Recently Fred and I were up talking late at night and I busted out a capri sun to quench my thirst.
In the pre-relationship "he likes me, he likes me not" speigl, this is most definitely in the "He likes me" column.

Good Things DO Come to Those Who Wait
After the crushing blow to my Lady Mojo a few weeks ago, I was really unsure of where I stood with Fred. He was still flirty, but I honestly doubted if he might have feelings for me. And by feelings, I mean ones of the "big kiss at the end of the movie" variety. We found ourselves in a somewhat familiar situation as before, after drinking with friends at a party and there were friends sleeping all over the place.
We stayed up talking until about 5am. He went to sleep on the couch. But, he left his phone in my room. I was about to pass the phone off when he knocked on the door to pick it up. He didn't want the phone to wake me up in the morning. He said he was falling off of the couch. I invited him to stay in my bed if he thought it would be more comfortable. He agreed. We laid there talking for a while.
And then HE KISSED ME! And the next day he wasn't all weird. I was mildly concerned it might have been a drunk impulse from him, but he said he was almost completely sober at the time and he knew what he was doing!
PRAISE THE LORD!!!

When I Get You Alone???
Let's suppose for a minute you meet a guy through mutual friends, several years ago. You continue to meet over the years. You went to college together, but you weren't friends then. But now you are. Very good friends. Before you can count, you have fallen for him. Hard. You talk about everything- except what this is. You feel like you're in a relationship with Fred^, but are you?
Here are the positive signs:
- He's flirty.
- He asks specific details about your day.
- He tells you about his day.
- He watches tv at the same time as you and discusses it.
- He sends you music you might like.
- He plays his guitar for you.
- He says he does not think you are a flake.
- He tells you about his past relationships.
- He texts absurd movie quotes. That you understand.
- He talks about his friends with you. Honestly.
- He makes some awkward conversation about not liking John Mayer, and then says "Well I have a live album and it's not too bad." (which you can live with)
- He invites you to hang out.
- He invites you to crash at his house when you are out late.
You agree to said invitation, after all it is late, and the friend you were supposed to stay with seems to have gone to sleep for the night. Then you get offered the futon. Then he says there's room in his bed. And you sleep. All you do is SLEEP.
And you don't know where you are now....... possibly more confused than before.
